3-Day Danakil Depression Group Tour
DAY 1
Addis Ababa – Semera – Afdera Lake – Hamed Ela – Lake Assale
Your adventure begins with Ethiopian Airlines flight ET110, departing from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport at approximately 7:00 AM and arriving at Semera Airport at around 8:30 AM.
Upon arrival, our team will meet you at the airport and begin the drive toward Hamed Ela, the gateway to the Danakil Depression. Along the way, we stop at Afdera Lake, a spectacular salt lake, where you will have a short break and enjoy lunch for approximately 40 minutes.
After lunch, we continue toward Hamed Ela and the Dallol area. In the late afternoon, we drive to Lake Assale, one of the most spectacular salt lakes in the Danakil Depression. Enjoy the desert scenery and watch the sunset over the vast salt lake before returning to Hamed Ela for dinner and an overnight stay at a traditional Afar-style camp.

DAY 2
Lake Assale Sunrise – Dallol – Salt Mountain – Erta Ale
We wake early at approximately 5:00 AM and drive to Lake Assale to witness the beautiful sunrise over the salt lake. After enjoying the sunrise, we have breakfast surrounded by the spectacular desert landscape.
We then continue toward Dallol, crossing the salt plain and exploring its extraordinary colorful mineral formations. Dallol is known for its bright yellow, green, orange, and white landscapes created by geothermal activity and mineral deposits. We spend approximately one hour exploring the crater and surrounding formations.
The journey continues to the nearby salt mountain, where you can observe the traditional salt-mining landscape of the Danakil Depression. After the visit, we return to the camp for lunch, collect our camping equipment, and continue toward Erta Ale Volcano.
The drive to the Erta Ale campsite takes approximately three hours. We arrive in the late afternoon and prepare for the short hike toward the volcano's crater area. After approximately 30 minutes of walking, we reach the crater rim.
Depending on current volcanic conditions, you can explore the area, observe volcanic landscapes and fumaroles, and enjoy the sunset from this extraordinary location. At present, there has been no visible active lava lake or significant active volcanic activity at Erta Ale for approximately six months. The experience therefore focuses on the volcano's dramatic crater landscape and geological features rather than guaranteed views of molten lava.

DAY 3
Erta Ale Sunrise – Afdera Lake – Semera – Addis Ababa
We wake early at approximately 5:00 AM and return to the volcano area to enjoy the sunrise over Erta Ale. The morning light creates a completely different atmosphere across the volcanic landscape.
Depending on current conditions, we spend time exploring the crater area, fumaroles, and volcanic formations before walking back to the campsite.
After breakfast, we begin our return journey toward Semera, passing again through the spectacular landscapes of the Danakil Depression. We stop at Afdera Lake, where there may be an opportunity to swim in the warm saltwater lake, depending on weather and local conditions.
After lunch, we continue the drive to Semera Airport, arriving in the afternoon for your approximately 5:40 PM flight to Addis Ababa. You arrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport at approximately 7:05 PM, marking the end of your Danakil Depression adventure.
